mao
1. (verb) to stop raining, become fine, clear (of rain).
Ko te arawhata i Ōmāhu me tērā i Te Pakipaki kua riro i te wai. E whakamao ana te ua, engari mao rawa ake kua nui ngā rawa me ngā taonga i mate (TWMNT 25/1/1876:20). / The bridge at Ōmāhu and that at Pakipaki have been taken by the water. The rain is easing, but when it finally clears much wealth and property will have been destroyed.
2. (noun) fine weather, clearing weather.
E mao ana ki ua, e ua ana ki mao (NP 2001:37). / It is fine weather until it rains, it rains until it is fine. (A saying used, not just about the weather, but commentating that good times alternate with bad.)
pāpuni
1. (verb) (-tia) to dam, stop (a stream of water, etc.), staunch, check the flow of blood.
Ko te mea nāna i pāpuni ai te nekehanga whakamua ko te take me Māori, me Pākehā kē rānei hei pīhopa (TTR 1996:6). / The matter that blocked progress was the issue of whether the bishop should be Māori or Pākehā.
2. (verb) to be blocked, dried up.
Ka tae mātau ki reira kua pāpuni kē te ngutuawa i te kirikiri (HP 1991:16). / When we reached the river mouth it had been blocked by the sand.
3. (noun) dam.
Kua tīmata kē te kāwanatanga ki te titiro, ki te hoko i ētahi o ngā pāpuni hiko. / The government has already begun to look at selling some of the electricity dams.
peka
1. (verb) (-ina) to call into a place, call on, visit, stop off.
Ki te kite ia i ētahi tāngata o ētahi iwi kē, o ētahi hapū kē, ka karangatia e ia kia peka ki te kāinga, ahakoa ope tino tāngata, ope ngoringori noa iho rānei ka karangatia e ia ki te kāinga, ka manaakitia e ia (JPS 1927:252). / If she saw people of other tribes or clans, she would call to them to stop off at the village; whether a party of important people or one of lowly status, they would be invited by her to the village and given hospitably.
2. (noun) branch (of a tree, river, etc.).
Ko te rākau tēnā e muia ana e te manu. E kore e haere noa mai tōna waka, ka tangohia mai anō he peka o taua rākau (JPS 1893:123). / That is a tree upon which birds flock together in numbers. If canoes were departing they would take branches of that tree.
3. (noun) branch (of an organisation, etc.).

4. (noun) company of people, contingent, detachment, group.
I te tau 1824 ka takina atu e Te Hanataua te puni a Ngāti Ruanui hei whakahirihiri i a Te Rauparaha e taiapuhia ana i Kapiti (TTR 1990:305). / In 1824 Te Hanataua led the Ngāti Ruanui contingent to assist Te Rauparaha who was being attacked on Kapiti Island.
purupuru
1. (verb) (-a) to stop the chinks of something, fill in, stuff up.
Me purupuru katoa kia kapi rawa ngā wāhi puare o raro o ngā wāra o te whare kei uru atu ngā kiore mā reira (TPH 15/7/1900:1). / All the holes at the bottom of the walls of the house should be filled in completely so that the rats can't enter that way.
2. (verb) (-a,-tia) to suppress.
Kaua e purupurua ā koutou kōrero (W 1971:315). / Don't suppress what you all have to say.
3. (noun) chisel.
He ringa tauhou, kāore anō kia waia ki te mau o te purupuru, o te whao (TP 1/11/1899:2). / He is an apprentice who is not yet familiar with how to hold the chisel.
4. (noun) hull (of a canoe).
Ka peke mai Rongouaroa i te purupuru o te waka (M 2005:2). / Rongouaroa lept from the hull of the canoe.
2. (noun) stopwork, strike (industrial).
