1. (verb) (-a) to stop, prevent, close.

Ko ngā kupu a Wī Piahana rāua ko Hēnare Piahana me whakakati marire ngā whare hoko waipiro katoa o Tauranga (KO 15/8/1884:4). / The statements of Wī Piahana and Hēnare Piahana were that all the places selling alcohol should be shut down completely.
