Tips for Searching the Māori Dictionary
Keywords
Here are some tips that may help you with your keyword searches.
- Single word - Searching for a keyword of 'whare' would list all entries that include this word.
- Multiple Words - You can use multiple words to narrow your search.
- Capitalisation - Searches are not case sensitive. All words, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for 'Whare', 'whare' or 'wHArE' will all return the same results.
Macrons
Macrons are used in written Māori to indicate the correct pronunciation of the vowel, which has a lengthened sound. They are written with a horizontal bar over the vowel.
You can search the dictionary using macrons in your keywords, however the search will find matching entries with or without macrons making it unnecessary to type in macrons. Should you wish to have the ability to type in macrons you will need to set your computer to do so.
