1. in a bad mood, in a bad temper, in bad humour - an idiom expressing the anger or annoyance that someone is feeling. A variation is to replace hē for kino.
Kua kino ngā piropiro o tērā rā, he kore nōna i eke ki te tauwhāinga whakamutunga (HKK 1999:91). / That one over there is in a bad mood because she didn't make the finals.
I poto noa iho tana moe, koinā e hē nā ngā piropiro (HJ 2012:37). / He only had a short sleep, that's why he's in a bad mood.
kino
1. (verb) (-hia,-ngia,-tia) to dislike, hate, ill-treat.
Tērā anō ētahi tamariki Māori, hāwhe-kāihe hoki, e mea ana he Pākehā rātou, e whakapehapeha ana, e whakahāwea ana ki ō rātou whanaunga Māori. He whakaaro tūtūā, he whakaaro e tino kinongia ana e te Māori, e ngā Pākehā rangatira (HKW 1/12/1900:15). / There are some Māori children and half-casts who say they are Pākehā, and are conceited and show contempt towards their Maori relatives. It's disrespectful and an attitude hated by Māori and esteemed Pākehā.
2. (verb) to be evil, bad, naughty, badly behaved, ugly, untidy, spoilt, corrupted, damaged, defective, faulty, wicked, harmful.
I te 8 o ngā rā o Tīhema nei, ka ngaoko te whenua o Whanganui nei i te rū, ā, i pakaru ko ngā kōrere wai mai ki te tāone, i kino katoa (TJ 4/1/1898:6). / On the 8th December the land here at Whanganui shook from the earthquake and the water pipes to the town were badly damaged.

nanakia
1. (verb) to be better than expected, not too bad, pretty good.
He nanakia tonu te āwhina a te iwi (HP 1991:80). / The effort of the people was not too bad.

2. (modifier) crafty, treacherous, deceitful, cruel.

ngākau kawa
1. (noun) bad attitude, sour disposition.

Kia mau tonu tātou ki ō tātou reo ā-iwi, engari kia kaua tērā e noho mai hei tīwatawata e raru ai tā tātou haere kōtui e ora tonu ai tō tātou reo Māori (HM 2/1996:2). / We will be in trouble if we have a sour attitude towards the language of other tribes. We should retain our dialects, but let's not let it be an obstacle obstructing our united progress whereby our Māori language thrives.

pukukino
1. (stative) be grumpy, bad-tempered, angry, volatile, cantankerous, irritable, crabby.
E mea ana a Te Hokena ko te Merenīhia he potopoto, he mangu, he māhunga mingimingi, he pukukino, he kūare, tēnā ko ngā Māori e noho tahi ana rātou he roroa, he ngāwari, he takahoahoa, he kiri mā - ko ētahi rite tonu ki te Pākehā te mā (TP 1/1909:4). / Mr Hogan reports that the Melanesians are shortish, black, have curly hair, are volatile and uneducated, whereas the Māori that they are living with are tall, gentle, friendly and fair-skinned - some are as white as the Pākehā.
2. (modifier) grumpy, bad-tempered, angry, volatile, cantankerous, irritable, crabby.
Ko ngā wāhine pukukino anake e hiahia riri ana ki taua tangata. / Only bad-tempered women want to be angry at that man.
2. (adjective) be pretty good, not too bad - a colloquialism used to say that a person, or something a person has done, is good or quite good and perhaps better than expected.
He autaia tonu te kōhine rā ki te kōrero Māori. / The girl over there is pretty good at speaking Māori.
3. (modifier) pretty good, not too bad.
Arā anō ētahi tāngata autaia nei te matatau ki te reo (HM 2/1994:3). / There are some other people who are pretty fluent in the language.

4. (modifier) difficult, troublesome - when used before a noun.

This caused conflict amongst the tribe. The children argued with the elders. Rāniera Te Iho-o-te-rangi and Te Mānihera Te Rangi-taka-i-waho along with Te Hiko's son, Wī Tamehana, were involved in this troublesome dispute.
5. (noun) fellow, bloke, guy, chap, tricky character - sometimes implies a sense of mischief.

6. (noun) amazing contraption, wondrous sight, extraordinary thing - a term used for something strange, unusual, unfamiliar or awesome. Sometimes a sense of humour is involved in the use of the term.
Katahi ka rere taua autaia nei. Aeha! Me te aha? Me te uira ka hiko i te rangi tōna rite o te haere. Kīhai i mau i te kanohi te hopu te āhua o ngā otaota me ngā rākau o taua whenua i te tere o te haere o taua rerewē (TWMNT 19/5/1874:138). / Then that amazing contraption sped on. Amazing! What was it like? It travelled like the lightning in the heavens. The eye could not catch the appearance of the vegetation and the trees of the land, such was the speed of the train.
2. (verb) to dislike, ill-treat.
kiriweti
1. (stative) be impatient of, hot-tempered, revolutionary, grumpy, abrupt, irritable, irritated with, bad-tempered, annoyed.
I whakaio tahi a ia ki ngā tāne kīhai i pīrangi ki te mau rākau mō tētehi pakanga ehara nā rātou, whawhai kē rānei mō tētehi kāwanatanga nāna tō rātou iwi i muru, i whakakorara. Heoi anō, ka noho kiriweti te kāwanatanga (TTR 1996:44). / She stood firm with the men who did not wish to carry arms for a war that was not theirs, or fight for a government that had dispossessed and scattered their people. But the government was annoyed by this.

marangai
1. (noun) east wind, east, rainstorm, bad weather.
Ka pātukituki au i te whatitoka. He wahine nāna i huaki mai, ka titiro mai ki a au e tū ana, e mate ana, e hūwiniwini ana, e ākina ana e te marangai; hūkeke noa ana aku niho, ko tōku tinana katoa matangurunguru ana i te mātaotao (TWMNT 20/4/1875:87). / I knocked on the door. It was a woman that opened it and she looked at me standing there in trouble, chilled to the bone, lashed by the rain with my teeth chattering and my whole body numb from the cold.

aroākapa
1. (noun) bad omen.
Mehemea ka moe ahau i te pō, ka kitea e au te kākahu o taua wahine e iri ana, ka kīia tēnā he aroākapa, he tūpou, arā he aituā (JPS 1898:129). / If I dream at night that I see that woman's garment hanging up, that is said to be an aroākapa, a bad omen, that is an impending disaster.

1. (verb) to lead astray, lead into bad ways, lead into wrong, lead off the straight and narrow.

kōripo marama
1. (verb) to have bad weather, have stormy weather, have inclement weather.
Ki Aotearoa tūtaki ai ngā hau mahana, haumākū o te raki ki ngā hau mātao, hau maroke o te tonga. Kāore e rata ēnei hau tētahi ki tētahi; koinā te take e kōripo marama ai ngā rangi (Te Ara 2016). / In Aotearoa/New Zealand, warm moist air from the north meets cold dry air from the south. The winds are not compatible with each other: that's the reason the weather becomes inclement.
2. (noun) bad weather, stormy weather, inclement weather.
Mēnā ka ua mō te katoa o te rā, ka kīia tērā he kōripo marama. / If it rains for the whole of a day that is called 'kōripo marama'.
2. (modifier) ill luck, luckless, unlucky, unfortunate.
