piriwai
1. (noun) mayfly - an insect widespread in Aotearoa/New Zealand rivers and streams. Adults are short-lived and at rest its wings point straight up like sails. The nymph stage is found on the undersides of river stones, they are easy to identify by their three long tail filaments. They drift downstream in the current, and fish feed on them. The typical length including the tail is 15 millimetres. Behind the legs, along the sides of the body, are feathered gills for breathing underwater. The bodies are often flattened to form a low profile to the current, which helps prevent them being swept away. There are about 40 endemic species of mayfly.
kōmiro
1. (verb) to whirl, spiral (as a current).

This saying refers to the turbulence of the Wairoa River, its whirling currents and how the people here are like their river.

Pito-one
1. (location) Petone - part of the city of Lower Hutt situated at the mouth of the Hutt river. The current name is a misspelling and mispronunciation of the original Māori name.
I ngā rā o te mutunga wiki haere kē ana ia ki te whakangau poaka, ki te tākaro whutupaoro rānei mō te karapu whutupaoro o Pito-one (TTR 2000:107). / In the weekends he went pig-hunting or played rugby for the Petone Rugby Football Club.
Kīngitanga
1. (loan) (noun) King Movement - a movement which developed in the 1850s, culminating in the anointing of Pōtatau Te Wherowhero as King. Established to stop the loss of land to the colonists, to maintain law and order, and to promote traditional values and culture. Strongest support comes from the Tainui tribes. Current leader is Tūheitia Paki.

Kātahi ka tirohia, nō te mea anō ka kaha te tūpou o te ia; kātahi ka karanga atu te toi whenua, “Kua tūpou te ia, whakamatauria!” (JPS 1893:148). / Then he looked at it because the current was rushing. Then the local people called, "The current is rushing, try it!"

Mehemea ka moe ahau i te pō, ka kitea e au te kākahu o taua wahine e iri ana, ka kīia tēnā he aroākapa, he tūpou, arā he aituā (JPS 1898:129). / If I dream at night that I see that woman's garment hanging up, that is said to be an aroākapa, a bad omen, that signifies an impending disaster.
2. (noun) spider web.
He māwhai pūngāwerewere i hangā hei kākahu (TW 14/4/1877:131). / Spider webs made into a garment.
3. (noun) fishing net.
4. (noun) māwhai, dodder, Cassytha paniculata - leafless plant parasitic on herbs and shrubs forming tangled masses with stems yellowish green up to 3m long. Found in northern North Island in lowland scrub.
5. (noun) ambush vine, Sicyos mawhai - an herbaceous climber with stems up to 10 m long and 3-5 tendrils. Has vanished from much of its past range over the last 50 or so years. Currently it remains common only on the less accessible northern offshore islands (e.g. Three Kings, Poor Knights and Mokohīnau Islands) and on the Kermadec Islands. In suitable conditions white flowers are produced throughout the year.
