waikohu
1. (noun) mist, fog.
Ka tapaina e Haunui ētahi awa i te pito tonga o te uru: ko Whanganui (mō te rahi me te hōrapa o taua awa); ko Whangaehu (mō te waikohu ka rere i te maunga o Ruapehu), ko Rangitīkei (ka taea te hīkoi inā pāpaku), ko Manawatū (i oho te manawa o Haunui nā te kaha o te ia me te hōhonu o te wai); ko Ōhau (tapaa mōna anō); ko Waikanae (mō te nui o te kanae) (Te Ara 2017). / Haunui named several rivers on the southern west coast: the Whanganui (for the size and spread of that river); the Whangaehu (for the mist that flows from Mt Ruapehu); the Rangitīkei (because it could be waded when the water was low); the Manawatū (from Haunui's surprise at the strength of the current and the depth of the water); the Ōhau (named after himself); and the Waikanae (for the abundance of mullet).
