1. (verb) (-a) to put out, quench, extinguish (fire, electricity), switch off.

Kātahi ka tahuna e Mahuika ki te mea i toe o ngā maikuku. Nā, rere ana he kāhu. Nō konei i tika ai tōna whakataukī, 'Ko Māui tinetinei ahi.' (TP 1/1913:6). / Then it was set on fire by Mahuika with her remaining nail. The harrier hawk flew away. As a result he was spoken about as Māui who extinguishes fires.
