Ka mea ngā irāmutu o Kāwharu kia haere rātou, mā te tauā e whai i muri i a rātou, manukāwhakitia ana e rātou (Wh4 2004:108). / Kāwharu's nephews suggested that they go away and that the enemy war party would follow them, they would deceive the enemy by feigning flight and then counter attack.

kauaeroa
1. (verb) (-tia) to ambush.
Ahakoa e mau pū ana a Ngā Puhi ka whanga a Murupaenga, te amorangi o Ngāti Whātua, kia warea rātou ki te whāngai hoata ki ā rātou pū, kātahi anō ka kauaeroatia (TTR 1990:18). / Although Ngā Puhi were armed with muskets, Murupaenga, leader of Ngāti Whātua, waited until they were reloading their guns and then ambushed them.

haupapa

I te ata ka haere te ope a Ngāti Kahungunu, ka whakanohoia te whakamoe kokoti; ka haere atu a Ngāti Huri ki roto i ngā whakamoe kokoti, ka patua e Ngāti Kahungunu (W 1971:204). / In the morning Ngāti Kahungunu's party departed and set an ambush; Ngāti Huri went into the ambush and were defeated by Ngāti Kahungunu.

kākahu haehae
1. (noun) ambush, feigned retreat - a war party pretends to flee to deceive the enemy and on a given signal the fleeing fighters turn and attack the pursuing enemy.
Ahakoa ngā tohutohu a Te Wherowhero, ka kōkiringia te kākahu haehae a Ngāti Toa me ōna karanga maha (TTR 1990:341). / Despite Te Wherowhero's orders, it charged a feigned retreat of Ngāti Toa and its allies.

tāpae
