noa

1. (particle) only, solely, just, merely, quite, until, at random, idly, fruitlessly, in vain, as soon as, without restraint, freely, unimpeded, unbridled, casually, easily, without any fuss, suddenly, unexpectedly, spontaneously, instinctively, intuitively, by accident, unintentionally, without restriction, without conditions, randomly, without knowing why, to no avail, for no good reason, very, exceedingly, absolutely, already, right up until - a manner particle following immediately after the word it relates to. Denotes an absence of limitations or conditions. Often occurs in combination with other particles, e.g. noa iho. Where noa follows a verb in the passive it will take a passive ending also, usually -tiaAs with other manner particles in Māori, while having a general overall meaning, noa can be translated in a variety of ways, depending on the context.

Tekau mita noa pea hei omanga māku. / I probably had only 10 metres to run.

1. (adjective) be done blindly, at random.

1. (verb) to do anything at random, heedlessly, without authority, without permission - also written as one word, pokanoa.

I te 17 o Hune nei, i whakawākia rāua i te Kōti Matua mō te hara tuhituhi poka noa i ngā ingoa tāngata kē ki ngā tieki tono moni i ngā pēke, ā whakataua ana e te kōti kia kotahi tau mō tētahi, mō tētahi ki te whare herehere (TWMA 20/6/1884:3). / On 17th June they went on trial in the Supreme Court for writing fraudulent cheques and were each sentenced by the court to one year in prison.

tīpokapoka

1. (verb) (-hia,-tia) to take at random.

Ki te kōrero a Tuturu, i te wā i ō rātou pakeke e ora ana, kāore e waiatatia te whiti tuatahi nei me tūpono rawa ki te mate o tētehi o roto i te kāwei o ngā Te Heuheu. Koirā te take, ki tana whakamārama, i tīpokapoka ai te mau o ngā kupu me ngā rārangi o tēnei whiti i ētehi, ā he tokomaha kāore tonu i mōhio ki te kaupapa tika o te whiti nei (M 2004:264). / According to Tuturu, in the lifetime of their elders, this first verse was never sung unless the occasion was the death of one of the Te Heuheu lineage. That was the reason, as he explained, why only some words and lines of this verse were known to some people, and many never learnt the correct text of this verse.

He ōrite te tūponotanga puta o ia tae. He pāpono matapōkere tēnei (TRP 2010:165). / Five counters are placed in a container. The size of each counter is the same, but the colours are different. A counter is taken out of the container, but is the person does not look at it. The probability of each colour appearing is equal. This is a random event.

1. (noun) random outcome.

He whero te porotiti ka tangohia i te ipu (i te whakamātau tūponotanga i runga nei). He putanga matapōkere tēnei nā te mea he ōrite te tūponotanga puta o ia porotiti (TRP 2010:165). / The counter taken from a container is red. This is a random outcome because the outcome probability for each counter are the same.
