Tae rawa atu te ope a Taranaki kua kore he tāngata, kua wera hoki te pā i te ahi. Ko ngā tūpāpaku e pūkai ana ko Te Waitere, ko tētahi āpiha Pākehā me tana wahine me ngā tamariki tokotoru, me ētahi atu Pākehā tokorua (TP 5/1904:8). / When Taranaki's party finally arrived the pā had been burnt. The bodies that were lying in a heap were Te Waitere, a Pākehā officer and his wife and three children with another two Pākehā.
