1. (verb) (-tia) to assemble, gather together, heap up.

I te mutunga o te tau 1921, i riro nā Moko kē, ehara i a Rātana, i whakaatu ki te perehi kei te pōwhiritia ngā tohunga Māori e mau tonu ana te mana kia whakarauika mai ki te hui Kirihimete a Rātana (TTR 1998:113). / Late in 1921 Moko rather than Rātana announced to the press that all practising tohunga were being invited to gather together at Ratana's Christmas meeting.

Pāoho nei tō reo whakarauika, kei ngā tohunga o te manaaki, i rauhī nei, i maimoa nei i a au i Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori, me ngā uri o ngā iwi o te motu i rūmene nei i runga i tō reo tāwhiri (HM 1/1991:4). / The experts in providing hospitality, your call to gather together was broadcast and we gathered together and you took care of me, the Māori Language Commission, and the descendants of the tribes of the land who assembled to accept your welcome call.

Ka mea mai a Nuku-tamaroro, “E tā, kāore anō i ngata tō puku toa i te whakarauika e takoto mai rā i te moana, e pae nei i uta?” (JPS 1914:4). / Nuku-tamaroro replied, “O Sir, are you not yet satisfied with the heap of slain that lie there on the sea, and on the shore?”
