kōpani

1. (verb) (-a,-hia,-tia) to cover with a lid, shut up, shut in, shut off, close up, close off, enclose, conclude - e.g. with a lid or door fitting into an opening, but not used for a sliding cover or a cover turning on hinges.

Kōpania mai te taupoki (W 1971:136). / Shut the lid, please.

1. (verb) to shut (the eyes), screw up (the eyes) - shut them so hard that the skin wrinkles up around them.

Ka noho rāua, noho mataku i tō rāua mōhio āe, kua mate rāua i te wheke nei. Ka kupi ō rāua kanohi. I te roanga haere, ka wāta oho ō rāua kanohi (TWK 17:26). / The two of them sat there in fear because they knew that for sure, they would be killed by the octopus. They screwed up their eyes. After a long time they slowly opened their eyes.

1. don't interfere! shut up! be quiet! watch your mouth! - an idiom used to advise someone to keep their opinions to themselves and not to make comment.

āpuru

1. (verb) (-a,-hia,-tia) to shut up, suppress, crowd together, overwhelm.

He tokomaha i mate i runga kaipuke i te noho āpuru, i te pūmāhu, i roto i ngā nohoanga whāiti i runga i te tū kaipuke whāiti i tangohia mō taua mahi (TWMNT 24/2/1874:51). / Many died on the ships from overcrowding in close and confined spaces on board the type of narrow vessels used in the traffic.
