hānea
1. (noun) little black mussel, Xenostrobus pulex - small, ovate, smooth blue-black shell. Very common throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand, especially on open coast. Found on high intertidal zone on rocks and wharves in densely packed colonies often appearing as a belt along the shore at around mean tide height. Prefers heavy wave action.

2. (noun) marsh cress, Rorippa palustris - a creeping, hairy herb up to 30 cm tall, with weak squarish stems. The flowers are small, yellow and four-petalled. These are followed by swollen oblong seed pods. Fairly common throughout the North and South Islands on riverbanks and damp ground.
