tārewa

1. (verb) (-tia) to raise up, lift, suspend, hang.

Ka kī te ture, kaua hei patu tangata. Ki te patu tangata, ka tārewatia (TTT 1/12/1923:7). / The law says do not kill someone. If you kill someone, you will be hanged.

3. (verb) to be unresolved, unsettled, undecided, unfinished, inconclusive, set aside, unpaid.

Ko te wāhi e tārewa ana ko ngā roto kei waenganui i ngā whenua, ko ngā parumoana, arā ko ngā whenua e pā ana ki ngā moana, e ngaromia ana e te tai pari. Ki te Māori he whenua ēnei nōna (TTT 1/8/1922:13). / The part still unresolved relates to lakes within the land and the seabed, that is the land associated with the sea which is covered by the high tide. To the Māori this land belongs to them.

Ko te tikanga kē o tana kōrero, kia tutuki rawa ki te wāhi e whakaaetia mai ai te Kotahitanga. Heoi, tārewa noa ana tēnā take (TTR 1994:54). / She appears to have meant, they had succeeded in achieving recognition for the Kotahitanga parliament. That matter then lapsed.

Ka rere tārewa anō a Whakatau ki runga i a Tupakihimi rāua ko Paparakewa, tīhorea mai ana ngā matū o ngā tuarā (JPS 1895:169). / Whakatau rushed headlong on to Tupakihimi and Paparakewa, and tore the fat off their backs.
