1. (verb) (-a) to raise up, raise the pitch (in a song, etc.).

Kua whakamaua he whakakopa ki te kitā, koia hei whakahī i te tangi o ia aho (RTP 2015:62). / A capo is attached to the guitar, and that's what raises the pitch of each string.

2. (verb) (-a) to jeer, sneer.

Ka haurangi te tangata, ka whero ngā kanohi, ka pāhuka te waha, ka heke te ware, ka turituri, ka kōrero kino, ka ngengere, ka haunga, ka whakahī (TTT 1/10/1924:118). / When a person becomes drunk the eyes are red, he froths at the mouth, saliva flows, he is loud, he says bad things, he growls, is smelly and he sneers.
