tangi
1. (verb) (-hia) to cry, mourn, weep, weep over.
2. (verb) (-hia) to sing, make a sound.
He manu te kōmako; ka tangi ana i te awatea, ka tangi tētahi i konei, ka tangi tētahi i korā; nā, i te pō ka tangi ko tētahi anake, ka kīia ko tērā te toa (JPS 1956:201). / The bellbird is a bird which, when it sings in the daytime one will sing here another from somewhere else; and, when one sings alone in the night, that is said to be the male bird.

6. (noun) rites for the dead, funeral - shortened form of tangihanga.
Kei roto i ngā tangi ngā tikanga tuku iho, kāre anō kia rerekē ahakoa te whakaaweawe a te Pākehā (Te Ara 2013). / Traditional practices are maintained in tangi, which have changed little despite Pākehā influence.

waiata tangi
1. (noun) lament - song of mourning with no set actions sung especially at tangihanga. There are waiata tangi for peaceful deaths, deaths resulting from an accident, murder or having been killed in battle. The most numerous class of the traditional songs.
2. (noun) out of tune, flat (of a musical instrument).
I tino rangona te tangi hē o te tōiri (RTP 2015:55). / It could be clearly heard that the violin was out of tune.
mapu
1. (verb) (-a,-ria) to sigh, pant, hum, draw in breath - often used with tangi, e.g. tangi te mapu.
Ka eke ngā tāngata rā me tā rāua wahine ki runga ki te taumata ki Taumata-hīnaki, ka rongo mai te wahine rā, a Wairaka, i te tangi o te mapu o Hau (JPS 1927:281). / The two men and their woman ascended the ridge at Taumata-hīnaki, when the woman, Wairaka, heard the sighing of Hau.
Ka titiro mai ki ahau, ka āhua tangi te mapu, ka kōrero anō (WT 2013:9). / He would look at me, sigh and continue (WT 2013:9).

But the doctor strapped him down and pumped nourishment into his throat to keep him alive.
3. (noun) pump.
I te pō kua rere ā-moana te wai ki roto i te tima kua kore i kaha te mapu, kua haere tonu ko ngā tāngata i runga ki te tīheru i te wai (TKO 20/1/1920:7). / In the night the sea water flowed into the ship and the pump was no longer able to cope so the people on board had to bail out the water.
4. (noun) flood (of the tide).
aurere
1. (verb) to groan, moan.
I hea rātou i roto i ngā tau maha i aurere ai ngā Māori i te taimahatanga o ngā mate huhua i runga i a rātou? (TWMNT 21/8/1878:4). / Where were they during the years in which the Māori people were groaning under the burden of the multitude of afflictions affecting them?

2. (modifier) wildly, inconsolable, in despair - often follows tangi as an intensifier to indicate very emotional and prolonged crying.

I ngā ingoa e pānuitia ana ka tīmata te tangi aurere o ngā kōkā o ngā tamariki (TP 4/1905:6). / At this point the minister read out the names of the children written on the stone. While the names were being read out the wailing of the children's mothers started.
3. (noun) groan, complaint, grumble, moan.
Ka nui rawa atu te taumahatanga kei runga i ngā Māori. Ka rongo au i ngā aurere a ngā Māori ka mate te haere ki ngā tāone pāmamao kei reira te Kōti Whenua Māori e noho ana (Te Ara 2015). / The expense the Māori are put to is very great. I have heard of complaints of Māori that they have had to travel to distant towns where the Native Land Court is sitting.
waiata aroha
1. (noun) song of love - have tunes similar to waiata tangi and are sung without set actions.
Kātahi ka kī atu ki ana tamariki, kia mahia he kōauau (tētehi ingoa he whio). Ka oti, ka hanga ngā puta e toru, kātahi ka whakatangihia e te wahine rā tana waiata aroha mō tana tāne me tōna iwi (JPS 1897:104). / Then she told her children to make a flute, which they did, making three holes in it, and then the woman played her song of love for her husband and her people.
