kōpī

1. (noun) karaka, Corynocarpus laevigatus - tree with dark green, very glossy, large leaves and orange berries containing seeds which are poisonous unless roasted. Cultivated by Māori. Found on coastal regions.

1. (noun) hairy alpine buttercup, mountain buttercup, Ranunculus insignis - a very large and beautiful native buttercup, with glossy leaves, found in pools of water in subalpine to low alpine regions. Leaves are heart- or kidney-shaped, thick and leathery with brown hairs fringing their toothed margins. Flowering stem is branched and carries numerous bright yellow flowers, 2-5 cm in diameter. Usually five to seven petals.

hiwi

1. (noun) inanga, whitebait, Galaxias maculatus - a small silvery-white native fish with a slender body. Found in streams, rivers, lakes, swamps and pools throughout the coastal regions of Aotearoa/New Zealand up to 215 km inland. Forms small to large schools. Maximum size 190 mm. Adults mature at 1 year and migrate downstream on new or full moons to spawn when the spring tide floods marginal vegetation. Eggs are left amongst the vegetation out of the water and hatch at the next spring tide.

(noun) willowherb, Epilobium microphyllum - an endemic tufted, creeping herb with woody bases, and numerous ascending, wiry, purple-black or black stems. White petals and flowers from December - February. Found from about Kāwhia and East Cape south, locally abundant around the Cook Strait region, thence mainly easterly in the South Island in gravelly or shingly riverbeds, flats and outwash plains from sea level to 1,200 m.
