1. my oath, you bet, yes indeed - an idiom used to agree strongly with a statement.

1. (interjection) but, but rather.

2. (interjection) on the other hand, rather, on the contrary.

Tēnā, i pai rānei a Ihu i tōna kitenga i a rātou? Kāhore, engari i āritarita ia ki a rātou (KO 15/10/1883:15). / Well, was Jesus pleased when he saw them? No, on the contrary, he was annoyed with them.

1. not so, rather that than.

Engari anō tēnā i te tino kore rawa atu nei. / Rather that than nothing at all.
Heoi, ko te nuinga o rātau i te hui nui a te iwi i tū ki Poutū, kāre i pai kia whītiki, engari mēnā ka urutomokia te rohe o Ngāti Tūwharetoa, engari anō tēnā (TTR 1994:141). / However, the majority at a large tribal meeting held at Poutu were against taking up arms, but if Ngāti Tūwharetoa territory was invaded, that wouldn't be so.

1. its food so eat it, get it down you - an idiom used for a child who won't eat what's put in front of her/him, turning her nose up up because she doesn't like the food.

Rangi: He aha koe e auē nā? Pare: He kore nōku e pai ki te kāroti me te kamokamo. Rangi: Engari koe he kai. Kia tere kē tō kai i ngā kai nā kia pau rā anō! (HKK 1999:158). / Rangi: Why are you bawling? Pare: Because I don't like the carrots and kamokamo. Rangi: Get it down you. Hurry up and eat it all up!

1. (particle) but, on the other hand - a particle to indicate that the second idea expressed is somehow at odds with the first.

Ko au e mahi ana ki te huna, ko Rangi ia e tīwaha atu ana, e tāwhiriwhiri atu ana ki a rāua (HJ 20015:107). / I was trying to hide, but Rangi was calling out and waving to them.

Ehara ia i te tangata kaha, engari ia, ki te pukuriri ia, kia tūpato. / He is not a strong man, but then if he is angry be careful.

1. (particle) but, on the other hand - variation of engari.

Ko te mahi a te Māori he noho, he mahi i roto i te ao Pākehā, erangi ki te haere ia ki tētehi tangihanga, hui rānei, e hoki hāngai pū tonu ana ki āna tikanga, whakakaha ake ai i tana taha Māori (TTR 1996:49). / Māori live and work in the Pākehā world, but a Māori returning to a tangihanga or hui, returns right back into the middle of his customary practices, thus reinforcing his Māori identity.
