1. (verb) to fight, quarrel.

Nā ngā mahi akiaki a te kāwanatanga me ngā iwi Pākehā e kimi whenua ana mō rātou, ka nui te hunga Māori kua aro kē ki te whewhei mō ō rātou whenua (TTR 1990:345). / Because of mounting pressure by the government and Pākehā people seeking land for themselves, many Māori were preparing to fight for their land.
