1. (verb) (-tia) to find fault with, quarrel, oppose, clash, turn against.

I Te Kao ka whakaaro a Ākenehi me kaha ake tana whakahau i āna tūroro, ā, me ka kore e whakarongo ki āna tohutohu, ka whakawehia e ia. Koia tēnei te take i tahuri ai te iwi kāinga ki te kairiri ki a ia (TTR 1996:40). / At Te Kao, Ākenehi thought she should give strict instructions to her patients and if they refused to follow her instructions she would threaten them. This was the reason that the local Māori turned against her.

Ko tēnei pātere nā Te Whakatōhea, e noho rā i te takiwā o Ōpōtiki mō ngā kairiri i waenganui i a rāua ko Ngāi Tai o Tōrere (M 2005:128). / This chant of derision is by Te Whakatōhea who live in the Ōpōtiki area and concerns the hostilities between them and Ngāi Tai of Tōrere.
