Tōna whakaaro kua mau ia i te panata, i tētahi atu kurī rānei, (he kurī kai tangata te panata pērā me te taika, —he mea āhua rite ki te ngeru, nā te nui rawa) ; otirā kīhai i roa ka rongo ia ki te mamae o ngā matikuku o tētahi mea e rarapi ana i ōna kaokao me ōna peke (TWMNT 6/10/1874:258). / Her first impression was that she had been seized by a panther or some other animal (the panther is an animal that eats humans as does the tiger and it's similar to a cat but much bigger), but it wasn't long before she felt the talons of something scratching her sides and arms.
