Ka wharowharo, he mare motu, tata tonu ia ka rāoa (PK 2008:1160). / She was coughing, it was whooping cough, and she nearly choked.

3. (noun) phlegm.
He oko tā taua koroua hei tuha atu i tana wharowharo, e kore ia e tuha noa ki te whenua (PK 2008:1161). / That elderly man had a bowl for spitting his phlegm into, so he would not spit onto the ground.
4. (noun) coughing, cold.
Kia pai te kākahu i te tamaiti kia mahana te uma, te kakī me te puku. Ka pēnātia ka kore e pā te wharowharo me ngā mate whakangoikore (TWMNT 23/4/1873:45). / Clothe the child well to keep the chest, neck and stomach warm. When it's done that way colds and debilitating illnesses will not strike.
