1. (verb) to clear the throat, cough.

Ka wharo a ia, ā, ka tahuri te iwi, ka titiro ki a ia, kātahi rā anō a ia ka tū ki runga (TAH 46:14). / He cleared his throat and when the people turned and looked at him, then he finally stood up.

2. (noun) phlegm.

Ki te kai tētahi tangata i te kai, ka tuha tētahi i tōna hūhare, i tōna hupe rānei, i tōna wharo rānei, ka mākuturia, ka mate (W 1971:490). / If a person eats the food and spits out his saliva that, or his snot, or his phlegm, will be used to place a spell on him and he will die.
