1. (verb) sorry, I'm sorry, my apologies - a modern usage.

(mō) taku hē, (mō) taku hē

1. my mistake, I apologise, my apologies, I'm sorry, sorry for my mistake  - an idiom used to apologise for a mistake or oversight which resulted in the other person or people being affected. Sometimes the phrase is not repeated.

Mō taku hē, mō taku hē! Kāore kē au i mōhio i pīrangi kōrua ki te haere. / I sincerely apologise! I didn't realise that you two wanted to go.

pōuri

1. (verb) to be dark, sad, disheartened, mournful, sorry, remorseful.

Ehara i te hukarere noa iho nei, engari he huka whakapohe rawa i te tangata, pōuri ana te rā ānō he pō (TWMNT 30/7/1873:85). / It wasn't just snow, but snow that completely blinds a person and the day was so dark it was as if it was night.

He kōrero pukukata tēnei, engari rā he kōrero pōuri rawa (TP 11/1906:1). / This is an hilarious story, but it's also a very sad tale.

1. (verb) to regret, feel remorse, be sorry.

E kōrehu ana te ngākau o te tumuaki o te kura i tana mahi hē, arā, te pupuhi i ngā kererū. / The principal of the school regretted his wrongdoing, namely the shooting of the native pigeons.

kōhau

1. (verb) to regret, feel sorry about, rue.

Nā runga i te kore i tika o te tiaki me te kore i tika o te whakanohonoho i ngā hōia Māori ka hoki mai nei ki te kāinga, i kōhau ai a Makitānara nāna nei rātou i tono kia haere ki te whawhai (TTR 1998:100). / Because of the lack of care and rehabilitation of the Māori soldiers when they returned home, Makitānara regretted that he sent them to the war.
