I ngā rangi o te raumati, popō ana ngā whānau ki te onepū. / In the days of summer, families flock to the beach.

2. (verb) to smoulder.
Ka tae te taua ki te puni o te hoariri, kua wehe kē rātou, engari e popō tonu ana ngā ahi. / When the war party reached the camp of the enemy they had already departed, but the fires were still smouldering.
ponguru
1. (verb) to smoulder.
Te putanga whakareretanga o te rū ki taua wāhi, he mano, he mano, ngā tāngata ki te mate e ai tā te waea; ā, tū tonu eke ngā ngāwhā e hū mai nei, e tioro mai nei, e ponguru mai nei, kotahi tekau mā ono (KO 15/9/1883:3). / When the earthquake suddenly stuck that place thousands and thousands of people died, according to the telegram; and there are sixteen fumaroles still erupting, making a horrible noise and smouldering.

whakapopō

pongere
1. (verb) to be engulfed, stifling, dark, smoulder, give off smoke.
Nō te ekenga a ngā hōia ki reira, ka whiua atu e tētahi he mōunga ahi ki roto ki taua whare, inamata! Ka pongere, ka mura (TWT 1/9/1858:13). / When the soldiers stormed that place, one tossed a burning stick into the house and immediately it was engulfed in flames.
