1. (verb) (-a,-ngia) to join, bond, attach, connect.

Ka tae mātau ki te awa nei, ka kau, kāore e maunu te tarau, te whitinga atu, ko tētahi karapuke i reira tētahi kōhatu e tū ana, kātahi ka whai kupu mai te minita Māori ki a au me hua te ingoa o tēnei kōhatu ko Rongomaipāpā (ko te tipuna tēnei i tūhono ai a Te Arawa ki a Ngāti Kahungunu) (TTT 1/3/1930:2003). / When we arrived at this river we swam across, but didn't take off our trousers, and there was a hillock there where a rock stood. Then the Māori minister spoke formally to me saying that this rock should be named Rongomaipāpā (this is the ancestor that joins Te Arawa with Ngāti Kahungunu.)
