pāhua

1. (verb) (-tia) to plunder, rob, loot, raid, ransack, pillage, steal.

Nā reira, ka pāhuatia a Te Urewera, ka patua, ka mauheretia ngā tāngata, ka tahuna ō rātou kāinga, ka whakaputua ā rātou kai, ā rātou kararehe (Te Ara 2011). / As a result, Te Urewera were plundered, killed and the men imprisioned, their homes were burnt down, their food and stock killed or run off.

E toru tangata pāhua i haere atu ki roto i te pēke moni, pūhia ana ngā tāngata i roto, mauria ana ngā moni. He mea rongo mai nā tētahi tangata e pakū ana ngā pū, ka haere mai me tāna pū, e puta tonu ana ngā pāhua ki waho, pūhia ana. E rua i mate, kotahi i puta, ko ngā pēke moni i mahue (HTK 11/11/1893:2). / Three robbers went into the bank, shooting the people inside and took the money. A man who heard the gunshots came with his gun when the robbers were just emerging and they were shot. Two died and one escaped, but the money bags were left behind.
