1. (verb) to be sleepy.

hāmoemoe

1. (stative) be sleepy, drowsy, doze.

He mahi takoto noa te whawhaki i ngā pua hāpi, he mahi whakawhairawa mā ngā tamariki tāne māngere o ngā kāinga Māori, e hāmoemoe tonu ana i roto i te roanga o te rā, e omaoma haere kino ana rānei i runga i ngā hōiho tuarā pahore hei matenga mō rātou ake anō, me ngā tāngata e āta haere ana i ngā rori (TWMNT 22/3/1879:349). / Picking hops would be an easy and profitable employment for the lazy boys of the Māori villages who just loll about for most of the day, or race about dangerously on sore-backed horses, endangering themselves and the quiet travellers on the roads.

I ētahi wā, mahi ai ia i te roanga ake o te pō. Ahakoa te moe poto, te hāmoemoe noa iho rānei, ka ngata tonu tana hiahia (TTR 1996:108). / Sometimes he worked far into the night. Despite the short sleep, or mere catnaps, his need was satisfied.

1. (noun) spell to make people or taniwha sleepy.

Heoi, kātahi ka hapainga te karakia e Pitaka, he whakaturamoe (he rotu) (JPS 1909:205). / Then Pitaka began his ritual chant, which was to put it to sleep (a spell for putting it into a deep sleep).

Nā rite tonu ngā taura i ōna ringa ki te muka kua wera i te ahi; harotu noa iho ngā here o ōna ringa (PT Kaiwhakariterite 15:14). / And the cords that were upon his arms became as flax that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed from off his hands.

hōiho nāti

1. (loan) (noun) roaming horse, brumby - a tough mixed breed, including Clydesdales and thoroughbreds, found on the East Coast and associated with the Ngāti Porou tribe. They have a sleepy disposition, and are relaxed but intelligent.

He hōiho nāti anake te hōiho ka ora i te hau, ā, i te pou taiapa, ahakoa ngaro tōna rangatira mō te wiki, ki te hoki mai ia e tū tonu ana tōna hōiho nāti (TWK 6:29). / A 'hōiho nāti' is the only horse that can live in the wind, at a fence post, and even if its owner disappears for a week, when he returns his 'hōiho nāti' will still be standing there.
