horihori

1. (verb) to speak falsely, mistake, misjudge.

Kei roto tonu ahau i te kohu e whakapōhēhētia ana e aua iwi kawenga mātauranga nui, kia tino mōhio ai ahau ko wai e horihori ana (TP 10/1903:7). / I am still in the dark being misinformed by those people conveying important information but I will really know who is lying.

(noun) New Zealand sole, common sole, Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae - a fish greenish-grey on top, white beneath, with a rounded snout and a mouth not quite at the very front of the snout, hidden by a hook-like projection. The body is oval-elongate with a broad head and small eyes. Endemic occuring throughout coastal Aotearoa/New Zealand as far south as Southland. Inhabits sandy substrata in subtidal area to around 55 m.

1. (noun) artificial fertiliser.

He pararopi-kore ētahi whakahaumako, arā, kāore i hua mai i ngā matū pōpopo o te taiao, ko te nuinga kāore e whai waro ana, ā, he mea hanga e te tangata. Ka kīia he whakahaumako horihori (RP 2009:442). / Some fertilisers are inorganic waste, that is they are not made from natural decomposed material, the majority lacking carbon and are man-made. These are called artificial fertilisers.

1. (noun) tongue  - used in a number of expressions to describe lying and liars. e.g. arero teka, arero hīanga, arero horihori.

Ka titiro te tākuta, kātahi ka kī atu ki a ia, "E hoa, whātero tō arero." (TM 15/5/1881:3). / The doctor looked and then said to her, "My friend, please poke out your tongue."
