1. (stative) be far off, distant.

Kātahi ka titiro atu te rangatira o te pā nei ki tana kōtiro ka hoi noa atu ki tawhiti o te pā (NM 1928:143). / Then the chief of this pā noticed that his daughter was a long way away from the pā.

2. (stative) be deaf, obstinate, stubborn.

Ka ngare te tangata nei i tana tamāhine kia haere ki runga ki te waka kia riro ki Aotea, ngare noa, kīhai hoki i rongo, ka hoi a Te Kahu-rere-moa (NM 1928:120). / This man urged his daughter to go on the canoe to be taken to Aotea, but despite his persistence she did listen, Te Kahu-rere-moa refused to go.

I will go and look for him and when I reach that disobedient slave I will crack his skull”.

4. (noun) ear lobe.

Iti noa te tapa i auahangia ki Aotearoa nei – ka kite ngā Pākehā i Pēwhairangi e mau ana hei hoi taringa (Te Ara 2015). / Only small amounts of tapa cloth were made in New Zealand – Pākehā saw it in the Bay of Islands being worn earlobe adornment.
