1. (verb) (-ia,-ina,-tia) to refuse, decline, deflect, distort.

He mea whakapeka tūmatanui e Te Heuheu te tono mai a te Pirimia i a ia, ā, karanga kētia ana e ia ngā rangatira ā-iwi me nga māngai o ngā rōpū Māori, kia hui tahi mai rātau ki te marae o Hīrangi e tata ana ki Tūrangi, nō te 29 o Hānuere o te tau 1995 i hui ai (TTR 2000:215). / The Prime Minister, Jim Bolger, invited a group of senior Māori leaders to go to Wellington to discuss the plan. Te Heuheu publicly declined the invitation of the Prime Minister, instead calling tribal leaders and representatives of Māori organisations to gather together at Hīrangi marae, near Tūrangi, and on 29 January 1995 the hui was held.
