pūkeko Play

1. (verb) (-tia) to be experienced.

I aua wā, mā te hinengaro kua pūkekotia, mā te aro mūrere, me te kaha o te ngākau e puta ai ki te ao mārama (TTR 1994:87). / The times required experienced and clever minds as well as strong personalities to succeed.


2. (modifier) old, appearing old.

Ko ngā kai o konei he taewa pūkeko (W 1971:307). / The foods here are old potatoes.


3. (noun) pūkeko, purple swamp hen, Porphyrio porphyrio - a deep blue-coloured bird with a black head and upperparts, a white undertail and a scarlet bill that inhabits wetlands, estuaries and damp pasture areas.

He manu hauwarea noa te pākura (pūkeko ki ētahi) (TTT 1/9/1927:657). / The swamp hen (called a pūkeko by some) is a lean bird.
