Nā te mea ka nui haere rātou, kātahi ka toa, ka kōkiri rawa mai ki te taha o ngā tāngata, muri iho ka whati atu anō, me te mea e kaiwhiri mārire ana i te tangata mā rātou (TWMNT 29/12/1874:323). / Because they were increasing in numbers they became bolder and darted near the people and then retreated as though making a deliberate selection of the person for them to eat.
