1. (verb) to be foolish, silly, idiotic, stupid, crazy, scatty, irrational.

Ka tae atu a Confucius ki te waha o te poka. "E hoa, ka nui tōku aroha ki a koe, engari he aha koe i heahea ai ki te taka atu ki konā? (TTT 1931:67) / Confucius reached the mouth of the hole. "My friend, I have great affection for you, but why were you stupid enough to fall in there?"

1. (verb) (-a) to search for, seek.

Ka pōrangi ki ngā maunga ki ngā wai matatiki, ki ngā rākau, ki ngā manu: kāhore hoki i kitea he wahine māhana (Tr 1874:34). / He searched in the mountains, at the springs, in the trees and the birds, but he could not find a wife for himself.

Ngutu pī: He waha kōrero wawau; mō ngā mea kōrero rorirori; he mea whakarite ki te pī manu (JPS 1929:48). / Babbler: A person who talks rubbish; for the ones who talk about trivial matters; they are compared to chicks.

wairangi

1. (verb) (-hia,-tia) to be beside oneself, in a daze, infatuated, foolish, suffering from mental illness, demented, deranged, unbalanced, unhinged, crazy, mentally distressed, eccentric.

Ko Hongi i wairangitia i te kaha o tōna ngākau pōuri (TTR 1990:20). / Hongi he was unbalanced because he was so depressed.

1. he/she is losing it, they're crazy - an idiom to indicate that someone is either forgetful, confused or is slightly demented. Can be used jokingly too.

1. (noun) mentally disturbed person, crazy person, mental case, lunatic, weirdo, nutcase, loony, nutter, psychopath.

pōrewarewa

1. (verb) to be stupefied, dazed, stunned.

Nā te kakama o Te Purewa ko tāna taiaha i kai tuatahi, hemo kau ana a Tionga. Otiia i pā tonu te taiaha a Tionga ki a Te Purewa, ā, nā te kaha o tōna pana pōrewarewa ana a Te Purewa, hinga ana ki raro (TTR 1990:258). / Because Te Purewa was so quick his taiaha struck home first, instantly killing Tionga. But Tionga's taiaha struck Te Purewa and his blow had enough force to daze Te Purewa and he fell down.

Ehara te ao Māori i te mata kohore, i te pōrewarewa rānei engari ia he atamai, he ihumanea (TTTT 2006:12). / The Māori world is not bleary-eyed or stupid but intelligent and clever.
