1. (verb) to refrain from speaking, be silent, sulk.

Ka whakakeke au. Kua rūpahu au ki taku māmā kāore noa iho ia i riri mai i a au (HP 1991:23). / I was silent. I had lied to my mother so that she would not be angry with me.
