1. (verb) (-a) to fill up (a space), occupy, replace, stand as a substitute.

I te tau 1898 i tuhi ia ki 'Te Puke Ki Hikurangi', te nūpepa i whakakapi i tāna, ki te whakaputa i ōna whakaaro mō te whakahaere o te kaupapa o te Kotahitanga (TTR 1994:31). / In 1898 he wrote to 'Te Puke ki Hikurangi', his paper's successor, expressing his views on the performance of the Kotahitanga movement.
