1. (verb) to nibble, bite frequently, eat frequently.

Ko ana kai he kūmara, he aruhe, he taro ngā mea hei kīnaki, he manu, he ika, he kai pai ēnei ki te Māori i mua ai, i te tāima i ō mātou matua, tupuna, ka nui te mārama o te ngākau o te tangata me te kaha o te tinana, me kakai i ēnei kai kua kōrerotia i runga ake nei (TW 30/11/1878:603). / His food was kūmara, fern root and taro, accompanied by birds and fish. These were favoured foods in the earlier times of our parents and grandparents and the mind was alert and the body strong. We should regularly eat these foods discussed above.
