1. (verb) (-tia) to deceive, confuse, baffle, bewilder, confound, disconcert, nonplus, bamboozle, delude, dupe, mislead, hood-wink, misinform.

Kei roto tonu ahau i te kohu e whakapōhēhētia ana e aua iwi (TP 10/1903:7). / I am still in the dark being misinformed by those people.

2. (modifier) deceitful, dishonest, disingenuous, untruthful, misleading.

He mea whakapōhēhē i te tangata taua kōrero i 'Te Wānanga', he tuapeka mārire; ko te whakamāoritanga hoki o taua kōrero kīhai rawa i tika, hē rawa ana (TWMNT 30/11/1875:152). / The article in 'Te Wānanga' is misleading, it's very deceitful; and the translation into Māori is quite incorrect.
