1. (verb) (-a,-hia,-ngia,-tia) to tease, give cheek, mock, irritate.

I a au i te kura, i te kāreti, whakatoia ai taku ingoa he taewa, he rīwai (HP 1991:18). / While I was at school and college I was teased with the name 'Spud'.
