Ko te kōrero a ētehi o ōna uri, i whānau mai a Te Whiti i te pā o Ōtaka i Ngāmotu, i mua tata atu o te putakari i Ōtaka i ngā rā tōmua o te tau 1832 (TTR 1994:171). / According to some of his descendants, Te Whiti was born at Ōtaka pā, Ngāmotu, just before the battle of Ōtaka in early 1832.
