1. (noun) bracken, Pteridium esculentum - creeping native ground fern spread by underground rhizomes which were an important food source for Māori. Harsh fronds on smooth chestnut-brown stems. Very common in open places throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand.

E kapi katoa ana te nuinga o te whenua i te tākaka me te taekai (TTR 1996:280). / Most of the land was covered in bracken fern and scrub.
