I te takiwā i tukupū ai te kapua pōuri ki te paewai o te moana, ā i te pakarutanga mai o te tūpuhi o te whawhai rāua ko te whakaheke toto ki tō tātou motu nei, tutū ana te puehu, kitea ana te mate me te hē, nā i reira ai maiengi tonu ake te 'Waka' nei i runga i te ngaru o te moana hei tohu mārama rawa, whakakaha i te ngākau o ngā Māori (TWMNT 16/11/1879:269). / At the time when the dark clouds were lowering on the horizon, and when the storm of war and bloodshed burst upon our land and death and destruction were seen, the 'Waka' rose up on the waves as a beacon of enlightenment and encouragement for Māori.
