1. (verb) (-tia) to bundle together, make into bundles.

I tētahi pakanga ki a Whanganui ka pūpūtia e ia ngā monoao, kia pōhēhētia ai he tāngata (M 2004:332). / During a battle against the Whanganui tribes, he bundled up monoao trees so that the heaps would be mistaken for people.

3. (noun) winkle, common cat's eye, cat's eye turban shell, Turbo smaragdus - a  univalve mollusc common on rocks between tides, the shell is dark, heavy and smooth, and has an eye-like operculum. Lives on the tiny young seaweeds on the rocks. A favourite traditional food of Māori.

pūpū tarakihi

1. (noun) paper nautiluses, Argonauta tuberculata, Argonauta nodosa- related to the octopus that has a rounded body, eight arms and no fins. Female produces a delicate pure white embossed spiral shell to house the egg mass. Lives near the surface of the sea in deep water.

1. (noun) octagonal murex, Murexsul octogonus - a univalve mollusc of the North Island rocky shore with a spindle-shaped, spiny shell which is white, brown or black with eight sides.

pūpū tarataratea

1. (noun) spiny murex, Poirieria zelandica - a univalve mollusc of shallow to deep water with a spindle-shaped, spiny shell which is white, usually with five sides.

pūpū tuatea

1. (noun) white bubble shell, Haminoea zelandiae - a round univalve of the North Island found between tides under eel grass, buried just beneath the surface on mudflats.

pūpū waharoa

1. (noun) brown bubble shell, Bulla quoyii - a round univalve found between tides under eel grass on mudflats of the North Island.

pūpū waitai

1. (noun) cask shell, Tonna cerevisina - a large, round univalve found in deep waters. The shell is thin with strong corrugated spirals and a very large opening.

pūpū tara
