ahi tipua
1. (noun) demon fire, volcano, volcanic activity, geothermal activity.
Ko Te Hoata ko Te Pupu ngā tuāhine a Ngātoroirangi. I a ia i mate ai i te huka i runga o Tongariro, ka karangatia ki ōna tuāhine kia haria mai te ahi tipua i Hawaiki; koia ngā puia (M 2004:200). / Te Hoata and Te Pupu were the sisters of Ngātoroirangi. When he was dying from cold on Tongariro Mountain he called to his sisters to bring volcanic activity from Hawaiki, hence the geysers.
atua
1. (noun) ancestor with continuing influence, god, demon, supernatural being, deity, ghost, object of superstitious regard, strange being - although often translated as 'god' and now also used for the Christian God, this is a misconception of the real meaning. Many Māori trace their ancestry from atua in their whakapapa and they are regarded as ancestors with influence over particular domains. These atua also were a way of rationalising and perceiving the world. Normally invisible, atua may have visible representations.

He has several names: Tū-kā-riri (Tū-the angry-one), Tū-te-ngaehe (Tū-who-tears-apart), Tū-mata-uenga (Tū-who-incites), Tū-tawake (Tū-who-hastens), Tū-whakamoana-ariki (Tū-who-enriches-the-sea), Tū-kai-taua (Tū-who-destroys-war-parties), Tū-kai-tangata (Tū-who-destroys-mankind) (M 2006:123).

Ka āhua mārama ake ki tōna āhua i ngā kōrero paki mōna: he wā he nanakia, he wā he atua tonu (TTR 1990:358). / It's somewhat clear as to his nature from stories about him: sometimes he was a villain and at other times he was a hero.

tipua
1. (modifier) strange, supernatural, abnormal, terrifying.
Ko tēnei tū tohorā he tohorā tipua, kāore e pērā ana i ētahi atu tū āhua tohorā e patua ana i konei, arā i te hamupēke, i te pāmu-wēra (TP 10/1902:11). / This type of whale is a demon, it's not like some other kinds of whales which are killed here, such as the humpback and the sperm whale.
2. (noun) goblin, foreigner, demon, object of fear, strange being, superhero.
He ira atua anake rātou me ā rātou wāhine, he ira atua katoa, me ā rātou mokopuna; he tipua katoa (JPS 1922:48). / They are only supernatural beings as are their women and all their descendants; they are all strange beings.
