1. (verb) (-tia) to pretend, mime, act, copy, simulate.

Ka kī kē ia ki ōna hoa, "He aha te hē o tātau ki te mahi moni, kaua e whakataruna ki ngā pakeke i ngā wā katoa." (EM 2002:34). / He said to his companions, "What's wrong with making money. We shouldn't copy the elders all the time."

Tērā anō tētahi tikanga o tēnei kīwaha e whakaatu ana i te whakaaro o te kaikōrero he whakataruna kē te mahi a tētahi tangata (HKK 1999:200). / There is another meaning for this idiom which is to express the opinion of the speaker that a person is pretending.
