hākerekere
1. (verb) to be downcast, despondent, dejected, depressed, discouraged, pessimistic.
Hākerekere ana ia ki te āhua mau ora o te reo o Wēra ki tōna tikanga kē hoki he whenua reorua kē tērā (TTR 2000:145). / He was pessimistic about the survival of Welsh in what was supposed to be a bilingual country.
2. (modifier) gloomy, dark.
Kua rongorongo anō au mō aua pō hākerekere nei, engari kātahi anō au ka kite (HP 1991:179). / I had heard about those dark nights but it was the first time I had encountered them.
3. (modifier) close-cropped (of hair).
Ngā uru hākerekere o te toa, e kore e mau i te ringa o te hoa ngangare (PK 2008:67). / The close-cropped hair of the warrior cannot be held by the enemy.
4. (noun) multitude.
Nā tēna tohunga anō, nā Ben Yehuda, ka toko ake te whakaaro kia whakaaratia ake, kia whakaoratia ake te reo hei reo kōrero mā te mātinitini, mā te hākerekere (HM 1/1991:5). / Its own expert, Ben Yehuda, raised the idea that the language should be revived and revitalised as the language spoken by the grassroots and the masses.
