1. (noun) perching lily, Collospermum hastatum, Astelia hastata​ - a native plant with long, broad, tufted, grass-like leaves with black leaf bases and arranged in fans. Grows in trees, on rocks or on the ground. Has green flowers, on spreading fingers. Fruit turns red in autumn. This term only used when the plant is in flower.
