1. (verb) (-a) to beg, scrounge.

Ko ngā whare kua tanuku, kua hingahinga i te kore moni hei whakaora. Kua whai mai te tangata ko ngā tāone ki reira pītoto ai, ā, kāore hoki e ora i te kore tonu o te kai (TTT 1/11/1921:10). / The houses have collapsed and fallen over because of a lack of finances to renovate them. Then the people have gone to the towns to beg as they will not survive if there is no food.
