Kei te nui ngā mea kei roto i te iwi e mātau ana ki ngā tikanga whakamīharo maha a te hunga kua wehe atu, arā, ngā karakia tāhere manu, hī tuna, whakatō kai, ngā tangi a ngā manu maha e matohu nei mō ngā rā kei te heke iho, ngā pai, ngā kino, ngā tau whiwhi, ngā tau korekore (TTT 1/12/1929:1955). / There are many amongst the people who know the many amazing practices of the people who have departed, namely the ritual chants for snaring birds, fishing for eels, planting crops, and the calls of the many birds marking the approaching days, the good and the bad, the years of plenty and the years of famine.

E ai ki te kōrero, i tāpuketia a Tāmihana i Ōtaki i te taha o tana wahine i mate mai rā i te tau 1870. Engari kāhore he matohu o tana rua (TTR 1990:305). / It is said that Tāmihana was buried in Ōtaki beside his wife, who had died in 1870. But his grave is unmarked.
