hīrawerawe

1. (verb) to be irksome, painful, annoying, irritating, disagreeable, cumbersome.

Kotahi te Māori i tū rawa ki te marae, ki te aroaro o te Piriniha, he kahu Māori tōna, engari ko tana mea whakatangitangi he rōria rānei, he aha rānei, engari ko te reo Pākehā he mautiokena. I hīrawerawe taua mea ki ōku kanohi, ki ōku taringa puta noa ki tōku ngākau (TKO 31/7/1920:6). / One Māori stood on the marae before the Prince and he had on a Māori cloak, but his musical instrument was a jew's harp, or some such thing, but in English it is a mouth-organ.
